The Eureka Stockade
the eureka flag
Events leading up to the eureka stockade.
1.Mining licences were introduced and cost way too much. Also the police force were mostly convicts so they were poorly trained and inexperienced.
2. Police were mean and cruel and hunted people for licences and also did not care about law and order.
3.Miners started to band together to protest about the licences. The men met 3 times in November.
4.Annoyance reached peak when John Scurvy was killed by a bar owner but was let off because he was friends with the magistrate This showed that the people who were supposed to keep law and order were not doing so and didn't care either.
5.Miners got enraged and burnt down the hotel. 3 men were convicted and many people begged for their release, but it was a constant "NO".

The Eureka Stockade
the fight
1.Miners made the eureka stockade which was a massive circular wooden fence which they hid inside.
2.The miners were so annoyed at the government that they made and raised a flag without the Union Jack.
3.The miners also wanted representatives in parliament. Peter Lalor, one of the leaders, made the miners swear an oath under the eureka flag.
4. The miners publicly burnt licences and the governor became enraged.
5.On sunday no one thought the soldiers would attack because it was a relaxing day. It was a relaxing day because men worked all week but had one rest day - this was of course Sunday. Most of the miners left to see their families.
6.The soldiers did attack. 30 miners were killed and 12 soldiers were killed, Peter Lalor escaped. After that they set up a huge campaign to hunt the people who had managed to escape.
7.The royal gold commissioner hearing of the rebellion decided to come over and have a look. In the end half the police were fired, the gold commissioner was fired and the licence became a pound a year. Also all miners with a licence could vote and Peter Lalor got elected into parliament. There is also now a Melbourne suburb called Lalor after Peter Lalor.
